Portfolio Review Day at RISD,
If you're a student in a designschool, then no, you absolutely should not pay huge sums of money to aconsultant. You have everything you need at your fingertips, for free. You haveamazing professors, some of whom should ostensibly be writing enthusiasticletters of recommendation for you. If you have one such professor (or even agraduate student) with whom you have a close relationship, one who isconsiderate and honest, and who doesn't view your work with any ego orpedantry, then ask them for help. If you're absolutely dead set on spendingmoney, then do it even more wisely: buy a plane ticket to the US, go to Portfolio Review Day at RISD, and get feedbackfrom the admissions offices and professors directly!
You very likely will need help withthe other aspects of your application, like the essays. EVERY visual artistI've ever worked with needed tremendous amounts of help with the portfoliodescriptions, simply because visual artists tend to think that writing abouttheir work is pointless. (Not true. Be careful. People are judging you on this, after all.) But when it comes to putting together the actual portfolio, youshould already have the resources you need.
